At Hammonds Land & Cattle, we proudly raise Berkshire pigs, a Heritage breed known for their exceptional meat quality, docile nature, and strong foraging ability. We produce pasture and forest-raised pigs like our grandfather did 60 years ago. For the past five years, we have finished around six pigs annually, each weighing about 325 lbs. Two are typically kept for our freezer; the others are sold to help cover our costs. Pigs are not for everyone; they require space and adequate pasture fencing. Whether you're a homesteader looking for a sustainable livestock option or simply someone who appreciates high-quality pork, Berkshires are an excellent choice.
Why Berkshires?
For good reason, Berkshire pigs have been a favorite among farmers for generations. We have been researching methods to increase our pasture-raised Berkshire pig production. We'd like to complete a custom contract to finish around 100 pigs every fiscal quarter. We've seen increased demand for high-quality, naturally raised pasture pork, so we will keep you updated!
Known as the "Wagyu of Pork," Berkshire pork is highly sought after for its rich marbling, tenderness, and incredible flavor.
Calm, friendly, and easy to handle, Berkshires are ideal for first-time homesteaders and small farms. Well-socialized Berkshire pigs make great wrestling partners for my kids.
Berkshires thrive in pasture-based systems, happily rooting and grazing for food. This reduces feed costs and supports their natural behavior.
As one of the oldest pig breeds, Berkshires offer time-tested reliability in producing quality pork while maintaining traditional farming practices and values.
Berkshire's black coats with white face and foot markings make them easy to recognize.
Compared to commercial breeds, Berkshires take a little longer to reach market weight. However, the superior quality of meat is well worth the wait.
